Fatemi sapere...

***

I would like to show to those who had not had the opportunity to see her live, an other lamp I made, presented at Euroluce 2009. It is called "Malik" and is made for the historic mark of Aureliano Toso of Firme di Vetro Group. Its design, as is obvious, is not organic. On the other hand I do not pretend to do a 100% organic design. I show it to you here because I think that responds to the aspiration of which I have spoken with reference to the organic design. The aspiration is to want to do, somehow, a design "eternal". I know it is an expectation perhaps exaggerated but being an "aspiration" I think it can be justified. This lamp was described as "neominimalist" a term which, however, up to now has meant very little. But I think that this way of designing minimalist forms may be, in his small, a style. That which I aspire to, in parallel with organic design, is a "softened minimalism", we could also say "female". The geometries are elementary, but not harsh and pungent as those minimalist. All edges are rounded to make it friendly to the eye and the touch and the central slit is a little habit to make the product distinctive and not cold and impersonal. Its location is not a aseptic, but young and colorful. I would like to have your opinion on this, different from "I like it" or "I do not like it" because this blog is for me a source of ideas and would like it to be even for the reader.

-----

Today I am presenting a my project to help you, with an example, to understand my personal way to view Organic Design.

Fiola T by Tobia Scarpa per Leucos

Drops by Renzo Stellon per Salviati

--------

The glass is undoubtedly an organic material, perhaps the more organic of all.

--------

Following the development of the Formula One cars, I realize that every new model that comes up, at the beginning of the season, has a more Organic Design. And talk about the design of Formula One cars, as beautiful as they can be, it is paradoxical. There is not an aesthetic choice that is not dictated by aereodinamical needs tested with a computer or in the wind tunnel. Each curve is drawn following signs of resistance and lift.

--------

Undoubtedly a beautiful lamp, designed by a great master of the Organic Design. However, I believe that the process of stylisation and simplification of the animal, the heron precisely, has been that the result of the creative process been, at the end, outside of what is called Organic Design. Organic Design must show an object whose shapes are such as, to believe that it is produced by growth, and not by machining and assembly. In other words I would say that Heron lamp is yes inspired by nature, but in the same way in which the helicopter is inspired by the dragonfly.
In particular, we can fix the date of 1940 referring to the above-mentioned competition "Organic Design in home furnishing", held that year by MOMA in New York. If we refer to that competition, however, we must do also names and surnames and, in particular, the names are to be done are those of Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen who participated jointly and that opened the way for new artistic explorations. The product presented was the "Organic Chair." These same two designers, in my opinion, have created for their own account, even more significant products in the years to come. I refer, in particular, the chaise longue "Chaise" by Charles and Ray Eames in 1948, and to chair "Tulip" (which does not have the shape of a tulip!) of Eero Saarinen, 1956. Due seems, then, to recall another object, created before all those submitted, designed by the brilliant mind of another famous Scandinavian designer of the period, with clear organic inspiration. If we move on that date the birth of this style, then its fathers should be Eero Saarineen and Charles Eames that, at that competition, presented a revolutionary product which is still today a subject of worship. Is this not a wonderful example of Organic Design applied ti goldsmith art? This beautiful Assyrian bracelet, of what period could be, 700 BC?
